![]() I just had to kind of push through that and persevere through that.” And she was just like, ‘you’re not gonna quit, are you?’ She looked at me kind of crazy. When I had to move over, I remember having a conversation where I was a ‘Mom, I don’t know if I want to keep doing this if they’re going to do me like this. Watt, Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy, all those dominant linemen when I was growing up as a young kid, probably 14 or 13. I had trials and tribulations in high school, when I went from D-line to O-line. Just like that mindset she kind of raised us with, it’s really something I’ve leaned on. I’m putting in the work to be successful. Not only do I know I’m getting the best work here - our D line is fantastic, our coaches are fantastic, my room is fantastic - but I know that now I’m going to put in the work. If you want to get something out of something, it’s all about what you put into something. One thing she always instilled in us was that work ethic. She grew up in kind of a rough area, Shreveport, Louisiana. Smith: “I’d definitely say my role model growing up was my mom. If you want to shut somebody up, it’s less about what you say and what you do.” Related: Dak Prescott turns 30: How the Cowboys QB’s leadership, drive is as apparent as ever I felt like the most important thing was the work. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to get trapped in your own head or just obsessed over what people are saying about you. Like I said at that press conference, everybody has an opinion, everybody’s entitled to their opinion. Like before I got drafted you just you see stuff on Twitter like you got to you got to train yourself to staff and Twitter. Smith: “I definitely tried to block out the noise for sure. On how much he pays attention to the outside noise. I felt like I stepped up to it, but there’s still a lot of work to be done for me, obviously. I knew I had the right stuff, I knew God blessed me with the right stuff and it would just be up to me and my mindset on how I was going to handle that challenge. There’s always sudden change in football, there’s always those high pressure situations. It was just one of those sudden change situations, and that’s football in general. Even in college that’s kind of how I got my start, the guy in front of me got injured for a while so I got to come in there for a few games just to get my toes wet. ![]() It helped me learn what I needed to do at a faster pace. Being able to lean on those guys, just being able to probe their minds, from to Tyron, Zack, all those guys. I thank God for them older guys and just being drafted to the room that I was in. Unfortunately, Tyron had his deal and it was just such a shock. Because throughout training camp I played most of my reps at guard. Smith: “Obviously, at first, it was surprising. On the pressure of being a starter during his rookie season.
